Biblical Exegesis

 

Notes:

Translation  

The rendering of a given composition from one

 language into another.

  Literal Translation

A specific kind of translation.  It is one that expresses, as far as is possible the exact meaning of the original words.  It is a word for word translation.         

  Transliteration

The rendering of the letters of one language into the corresponding letters of another language.    Example:  The Greek word angelos is translated into English as "messenger" but it is transliterated as " angel".

  Version

A translation from the original language of a literary text into another language.    The Latin Vulgate qualifies as a version.

          Revision or Revised Version

Works that are translated from one language, and after careful and systematic review for the purpose of correcting errors or making necessary emendations.

The Septuagint

Septuagint - The Septuagint or Greek version of the Old Testament.   It is the name of the earliest Greek translation of the Hebrew Torah; later it came to include the whole OT and the Apocrypha.Seventy Jewish scholars (another tradition says seventy-two) went to Alexandria, Egypt and translated the first five books of the Bible (the Law or Torah).  Its  symbol is LXX. 

 The Latin Vulgate

Translation of the Hebrew OT and Greek NT into Latin, by Jerome at Bethlehem circa in 400 A.D. at the request of Pope Damasus of Rome.  The Council of Trent(1546) decreed that it was to be the official Bible of the Roman Church.
